Telangiectasia, also known as spider veins, is usually caused by hormonal changes, obesity, genetics, blood clots, medical conditions, and medications. Sclerotherapy Candidates
Sclerotherapy treatments are helpful for men and women who don’t like the small to medium blood vessels that appear through the skin on their body and face. Typically, spider veins are most prominent on the thighs and lower legs which is why some individuals might avoid wearing swimsuits, shorts, or other types of clothing that do not cover their spider veins. Patients getting sclerotherapy should be in good health before their treatment to avoid complications or reactions. Additionally, the treatment is not good for clients who are pregnant or have a history of blood clots.
Procedure Technique
Sclerotherapy is completed in one visit and it doesn’t take very long. Typically, we can perform the treatment without anesthesia, but if requested, our medical provider is able to apply a topical anesthetic cream to minimize any discomfort. To begin with, the provider will identify the blood vessels that need treatment and prep the skin by cleansing the area being treated. Next, we insert a fine-gauge needle into the vein so we can apply the sclerosing solution. After the needle is empty, we remove it and use gauze to cover the injection site and stop any bleeding. We can repeat the process to treat all of your spider veins.
Your Sclerotherapy Treatment
After sclerotherapy, patients can leave the office to continue their normal routine. You may see mild redness, swelling, or bruising in the treated areas, but this will usually subside on its own. We suggest wearing compression garments to encourage blood circulation after your treatment for better, faster results. It can take some time for the sclerosing solution to show results, but the treated spider veins should shrink, turn a white color, and then fade or disappear. You may need two or more sessions to achieve optimal results, but most patients are pleased with the improvements after their first treatment.
